The excitment of life in the country...

I found this adventure that happened to Mama and I a several months ago. I wrote it down and just now came back across it and I thought I would share it with y'all.

The night was just like many others around my house. Mama and I were ready for bed but decided to read our wonderful book The Thorn by Beverly Lewis. Well we read longer than planned and about midnight my basset hound, Bessy Hulu started barking. I didn't think much about it because she likes to bark but then I realized that wasn't her normal bark. So I went to see what she was barking at and low and behold it was an armadillo. If y'all know anything about armadillos you know that you don't want them. I told Mama and then grab a flash light. Mama told me to keep track of it while she goes to get a hoe and shovel. So me and Bessy follow it to the back yard where Mama is waiting with our weapons. We take a swing at it with a shovel and hoe and squeal when it jumps a good foot or two in the air. I would like to say that it was a very stupid armadillo because I am pretty sure that if some one was hitting me I would go into the field and hide but, no it was almost like it wanted to die the way it kept so close to us. After a few more hits, jumps and squeals the armadillo runs to the front yard. Bessy and I follow it and I'm told not to lose it while my Mama goes back inside for a gun. Thank goodness Bessy was with me because I would have lost the thing several times without her barking and running along with it. Did y'all know that those little things can run extremely fast. It finally stopped to dig beside a tree nearly at the end of our long drive way so I held Bessy so she wouldn't chase it any more. Then here comes Mama with a gun, she took aim and pulled the trigger... nothing, she tried again still nothing. So she walked back to get a different  . Mama comes back with the new gun but now she cant see the armadillo because it moved into a big bush. She thinks she sees it and shoots. The gun fires thank goodness but she misses which bothered her because at the shooting range she shot better than my brother and a cop. Any ways we hear it scurry off in the opposite direction and decide to head back to the house upset that it was still alive.

So when I hear people say that there is nothing to do out here where I live I just chuckle to myself and think of all the adventures I have had. Hey that sounds like a new show 'Adventures in the Country' well at least it could be a new post for me.
